Stage 3: The Scramble
Everything landed at the same time. Documents, money, care decisions, siblings, all of it urgent and none of it labeled. Sequencing is the entire game in this stage.

- The immediate crisis stabilized, and now everything needs deciding at once.
- You’re being asked for documents nobody can find.
- You’re touring facilities and comparing Medicare plans in the same week.
- Your siblings have opinions, and none of you have a process.

What’s actually happening right now.
This stage feels like drowning because almost everything looks equally urgent and nothing tells you what’s actually first. Most of it isn’t. A handful of decisions are load-bearing, the legal authority, the money map, the care setting, and the rest can wait behind them without penalty.
It’s also where the family system gets set for years. Who holds authority, who has information, who does the actual work: those get decided in these weeks, usually by default rather than by anyone deciding. They are very hard to renegotiate later.
Do this week.
- Establish legal authority first. Nearly everything else is blocked behind power of attorney and a health care proxy.
- Map the money before you choose care. What they can sustain determines which options are actually real.
- Find out what they qualify for. VA benefits, Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs. Real money routinely goes unclaimed.
- Choose the next care setting on evidence, not availability. Tour with a written list of questions.
- Assign roles in writing, so the person who stepped up first doesn’t silently inherit every job.

Choosing a facility before mapping the money means falling for something they can’t sustain for three years.
Assuming the paperwork works
Finding an old power of attorney is not the same as having authority. Check that it’s current and covers what you need.
Doing it all alone to keep the peace
The fight arrives anyway, later, and by then you’re too depleted to have it well.
