STAGE 2 OF 7
Stage 2: The Wake-Up Call
The call came. Everything is urgent, everyone wants an answer, and you have about four hours to make decisions that will shape the next four years. Stabilize first. Decide second.
Everything on this page is free. No email required to read it.
You’re in this stage if…
- Your parent is in a hospital, or just came home from one.
- Someone handed you a discharge plan and a deadline in the same sentence.
- You’re being asked to choose a facility from a list you’ve never seen.
- You haven’t slept, and you’re the one making the calls.

What’s actually happening right now.
The system is moving fast because it’s built to. Discharge planners are under real bed pressure, and the default is to move your parent along on their timeline, not yours. Nobody in that hallway is lying to you. They’re just not going to volunteer the parts you’d need in order to slow things down.
Almost every expensive mistake in caregiving is made in these two weeks, by exhausted people being handed clipboards. The goal right now isn’t to solve the next five years. It’s to buy enough time and information to not get them wrong.
Do this week.
- Do not accept a discharge plan you don’t understand. Ask what happens if you say “not yet.”
- Find out whether this stay is an inpatient admission or “observation.” That one word decides whether Medicare pays for rehab.
- Get one notebook. Every name, every number, every promise made by staff goes in it.
- Make sure someone can reach the money. A mortgage comes due whether or not the bank will talk to you.
- Tell the family once, deliberately, instead of forty times badly.
Three mistakes this stage is famous for.
Signing because someone is waiting
Being handed a form by a person standing over you is not a deadline. Ask for a copy and ten minutes.
Taking the first bed offered
Beds open up. The facility with availability today is not automatically the right one for two years.
Taking them home to “figure it out”
Going home without help arranged is how the second crisis happens, usually within a month.

9 guides built for exactly this stage. Everything above is free. These go deeper.
First 30 Days Guide
The anchor guide for this stage
The bridge out of crisis into The Scramble. Sequences what to do first when everything feels equally urgent.
The First 72 Hours
Free
The highest-intent capture moment in the funnel. Nine moves and one question that determines whether Medicare pays for rehab.
Telling the Family
Free
Forty calls, each requiring you to say it again. Structure keeps this from consuming the week you have least capacity.
Emergency Financial Access
Free
The mortgage is due and the bank will not talk to you. A lapsed insurance policy here cannot be undone.
